"Free" means three different things in the app store, and most lists blur them together:

  1. Free forever. Everything is free, funded by donations or a nonprofit.
  2. A large free library. Most content is free, and an optional subscription adds extras.
  3. A free tier. The app is free to download, a useful part stays free, and the rest sits behind a subscription or trial.

None of these is a trick. Each model suits a different person, and knowing which one you are downloading saves you a surprise on day eight. Here is what each major app actually offers without paying, based on its official App Store listing on 31 October 2026.

Free forever: Medito

Medito is the clearest answer to "is there a meditation app with no subscription at all?". The Medito Foundation says the app is "100% free & non-profit", and its listing covers guided courses, breathing exercises, personalised programmes, sleep stories and soundscapes such as rain, ocean and white noise. It has a 4.9 rating from about 4,300 ratings on the US App Store.

Who it suits: anyone who wants a dependable practice and nothing to manage. The trade off is a smaller library and fewer sleep tools than the big subscription apps, which is the natural shape of a donation funded project.

The big free library: Insight Timer

Insight Timer lets you use a very large library of guided meditations and its meditation timer at no cost. The listing promises "100+ new free guided practices added daily" from a big community of teachers, in ten app languages. Premium ($59.99 a year or $9.99 a month) adds courses and extra features.

Who it suits: explorers. With so many teachers, styles vary a lot, so it rewards people who enjoy browsing until they find voices they like.

A free tier with real depth: CalmDepth

CalmDepth is built so that the free version is genuinely useful every day, because the moments people most need help rarely come with a credit card ready. The rule we built on: nothing that keeps you safe or calm in a hard moment ever sits behind a paywall.

If you later want everything, premium is $69.99 a year after a 7 day free trial (US launch price). CalmDepth is arriving soon on iPhone and Android, and the waitlist is open on our home page.

Who it suits: people who want sleep, breathing and someone to talk to in one free app, and who may grow into the full library.

Trials: Calm, Headspace and Balance

Calm, Headspace and Balance are subscription apps with free trials. That is a fine way to test them, as long as you set a reminder. Headspace's help centre explains that a 14 day trial converts to the annual plan and a 7 day trial to the monthly plan. On the US App Store, Calm lists annual tiers of $69.99 and $79.99, Headspace $69.99, and Balance $49.99 and $69.99. For a head to head of the two biggest names, see Calm vs Headspace.

The free alternative nobody advertises: your own breath

You do not need any app to start. The NHS breathing exercise for stress takes five minutes:

  1. Sit, stand or lie somewhere comfortable, feet about hip width apart.
  2. Let your breath drop into your belly without forcing it, in through the nose and out through the mouth.
  3. Breathe in gently, counting from one to five.
  4. Breathe out gently, counting from one to five.
  5. Keep going for at least five minutes.

The NHS notes you will get the most benefit if you do it regularly. Apps earn their place by making that regular part easy: a voice to follow, a reminder at the right time, and something to look forward to. Our guide to breathing exercises for anxiety adds four more.

How to get the most from a free app

  • Pick one moment a day. Morning coffee, the commute or lights out. Same place, same time.
  • Start with five minutes. Short sessions done daily beat long ones done twice.
  • Download for offline. Many apps, including CalmDepth, let you download free items for flights and dead zones.
  • Turn off what you do not need. Fewer notifications, more calm.
  • Upgrade only for a reason. If a free tier covers your evenings, keep it.

How to avoid a surprise renewal

  1. Before you start a trial, note the date it ends and the price it becomes.
  2. Set a phone reminder two days earlier.
  3. On iPhone, manage subscriptions in Settings under your name, then Subscriptions; on Android, in the Google Play Store under Payments and subscriptions.
  4. Cancelling a trial usually keeps your access until the trial ends.

CalmDepth sends a reminder two days before a free trial ends, and in Japan and Korea the paywall states the renewal date and amount up front.

FAQ

Is there a completely free meditation app with no subscription?

Yes. Medito says it is 100 percent free and nonprofit, with no subscription. Insight Timer also has a very large free library with an optional premium plan.

What is the best free meditation app for anxiety?

Look for free breathing and grounding tools you can open in seconds. In CalmDepth, all breathing sessions and Calm Now are free forever, and Calmy is free for 15 messages a day. Medito and Insight Timer also have free anxiety meditations.

Is there a free sleep app with sleep stories?

Medito includes sleep stories and soundscapes for free. CalmDepth's free tier includes one Bedtime with Sleepy a week, Back to sleep tracks and a large selection of sounds.

Are free meditation apps safe to use?

Meditation is considered low risk for most people, according to the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, though some people have unpleasant experiences. Choose apps that state their privacy rules clearly and stop any practice that feels wrong.

Do I need to pay to meditate properly?

No. A free app, or simply the NHS breathing exercise above, is enough to build a real habit. A subscription buys more variety, sleep content and personal guidance.
