Most "best meditation app" lists are written by someone who installed five apps on a Sunday afternoon. This one is written by people who build a meditation and sleep app for a living, which cuts both ways: we know exactly what to look for, and we have an obvious stake. So here is how we kept it fair. Every fact about another app on this page comes from that app's own US App Store listing, checked on 31 October 2026, and is linked at the bottom. Where a listing does not say something, we do not guess. Our ranking criteria are written out before the ranking, so you can disagree with the weighting and still use the facts.

We rank CalmDepth first. Below we explain precisely why, and we give every other app the credit it has earned, because several of them are excellent at the one thing they do best.

How we judged

We looked at what people actually ask for when they search for a meditation or sleep app: help falling asleep, help in anxious moments, an easy way to start, something for the children, a fair price. That gave us six criteria.

1. CalmDepth: the most complete calm and sleep app, with a friend who listens

The CalmDepth Today screen with the daily path
The CalmDepth Today screen with the daily path

CalmDepth is built around one idea: the hard part of meditating is not finding a session, it is knowing what you need right now and coming back tomorrow. So instead of a catalogue, you open the app to Your CalmDepth day, one calm path with the same shape every day: a five minute Daily Lantern with Lumi, a ten minute chapter on a theme Lumi picks for you, Bedtime with Sleepy and Sleep Music that plays as long as you sleep. Practice days count, never calendar days, so a missed Tuesday never breaks anything.

Around that path sits a complete calm and sleep toolkit, all in one app:

AreaWhat is inside (English library, 31 Oct 2026)
Sleep21 Bedtime with Sleepy worlds of about 45 minutes (why sleep stories work), 21 Back to sleep tracks of about 10 minutes for the small hours, 15 Sleep Music pieces of about 46 minutes
Sounds2,055 seamless sounds (sleep sounds guide) in 13 families (rain, water, forest, fire, noise colours, binaural beats and more), mixed in up to eight layers
Meditate59 single meditations from 5 to 20 minutes for 39 named needs, from burnout and exam nerves to grief, plus 60 Daily Lantern days and 60 chapters
Breathe11 guided breathing sessions (4-7-8, box, calm breath, coherent) and 8 Calm Now sessions for the moment it all feels like a lot
Journeys8 guided journeys, from Calm Stress and Anxiety to Sleep Better, each day a 10 minute CalmTalk, a question to reflect on and Calmy to talk it through
ChildrenSprout's Garden: 18 bedtime stories in two lengths for ages three to nine, behind a parent gate
Watch and readAnimated CalmFilms and 25 illustrated flipbook guides

Where CalmDepth wins

  • Calmy, a friend who listens. Calmy is the AI friend at the heart of the app. Calmy listens first, asks one good question and, when it helps, brings in the right friend: a two minute breath with Breezy, a sound mix with Melo, a story with Sleepy. You see and decide everything Calmy remembers. Free users get 15 messages a day.
  • Care in hard moments is built in, and free. Calm Now, crisis resources and local support lines are free forever, with no paywall on any safety path. When someone shares something heavy, Calmy stays with them and offers the right line for their country.
  • Made for you. Lumi can plan a meditation for one person (how our AI personalisation works): any length from 3 to 45 minutes, eight goals, eight starting feelings, seven styles, three paces and five voices, with a background from Melo's library. One personal piece a week is free.
  • Six guides you get to know. Calmy, Sleepy, Lumi, Breezy, Melo and Sprout each look after one part of your day. People come back to characters, not to menus.
  • A real morning report. Your night from Apple Health or Health Connect, opened with one kind question: how rested do you feel? Sleep data stays on your phone unless you choose to sync it.
  • Six languages. Every screen is written natively in English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese and Korean.
  • Family. One family plan covers up to six people, each with their own private Calmy and sleep data.

Good to know

  • CalmDepth is arriving soon on iPhone and Android, so there are no App Store ratings yet. You can join the waitlist on our home page.
  • Guided sessions are voiced in English first, with more voices on their way. The app itself already speaks all six languages.
  • Pricing: $69.99 a year after a 7 day free trial, $17.99 a month, family $99.99 a year, lifetime $299.99 (US launch prices).

Why first: CalmDepth brings a full sleep toolkit, guided meditation and breathing, journeys, children's stories, a family plan and an AI friend designed around safety together on one daily path, in six app languages, at the same annual price as the market leaders. It scores high on every one of our six criteria, where each other app here excels at one or two.

2. Calm: the big library and the famous voices

Calm is the best known name in the category, and its listing explains why: "100+ exclusive Sleep Stories", narrated by well known voices including Matthew McConaughey and Stephen Fry, alongside meditation programs, sleep sounds, soundscapes, sleep music and breathing exercises. Sleep sessions can be saved to Apple Health.

ProsLarge, polished library; celebrity Sleep Stories; app in English and nine more languages; 4.8 stars from about 2 million ratings

What the research says about meditation apps

Any app has limits, and they are worth stating plainly. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) summarises reviews showing that mindfulness approaches can help with stress, anxiety and sleep quality, while noting that much of the research is still preliminary. One 2019 analysis of 18 studies found that mindfulness meditation improved sleep quality more than education based approaches. A meditation app is a good daily habit and a kind companion; it is not a replacement for medical care. If you are struggling, a doctor is the right first step, and if you are in crisis, call 988 in the US (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 24/7) or Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Name your main reason. Sleep, anxious moments, learning to meditate, the children, or all of it.
  2. Check the free tier first. Open the app and use it for three evenings before paying.
  3. Read the price on the paywall, not in an ad. Several apps list more than one annual price.
  4. Look at languages. If you think in German or Japanese, an app that speaks your language makes the habit easier.
  5. Pick the one you look forward to. The best app is the one you open tomorrow.

FAQ

What is the best meditation app overall?

For most people we recommend CalmDepth, because it brings guided meditation, breathing, sleep stories, sounds, sleep music, children's stories and an AI friend into one app in six languages, at $69.99 a year. If you only want celebrity sleep stories, Calm is a strong choice; if you want the most free content, Insight Timer.

Which meditation app is best for sleep?

CalmDepth covers the whole night: Bedtime with Sleepy, Sleep Music, 2,055 sounds, Back to sleep for 3 a.m. wake ups and a morning report from Apple Health or Health Connect. Calm and BetterSleep are also strong for sleep.

Which meditation apps are completely free?

Medito says it is 100 percent free and nonprofit. Insight Timer has a very large free library with an optional premium plan. CalmDepth has a free tier with Calmy, breathing, Calm Now and sounds.

Is Calm or Headspace cheaper?

On the US App Store, Headspace lists $69.99 a year and $12.99 a month. Calm lists annual tiers of $69.99 and $79.99 and monthly tiers of $14.99 and $16.99 (checked 31 October 2026).

Do meditation apps actually work?

Reviews summarised by NCCIH suggest mindfulness can ease stress and improve sleep quality for many people, with the caveat that more rigorous research is needed. Regular practice matters more than which app you use.

Is there a meditation app for kids?

CalmDepth includes Sprout's Garden with bedtime stories for ages three to nine behind a parent gate, and a family plan for up to six people.
