A surge is
a wave.
Waves pass.
A big wave of panic can feel endless while it rises. Plot any wave and you see the same shape every time: it rises, it peaks, and it settles.
You do not have to stop the wave. You only have to ride it to the flat water.

Ride it · 01 · senses
Count the
room in.
Let your senses anchor you right here. Name each one out loud or quietly inside.
5things you seeA lamp, a door, a blue cup.
4things you feelSleeve, chair, floor, air.
3things you hearNear, far, and very far.
2things you smellOr two you love to smell.
1thing you tasteA sip of water counts.
Go slowly and be thorough. The longer you look, the more the room steadies you.
When it surges03
Ride it · 02 · body
Cool and
press.
Give your body one strong, simple signal. Cool water on your wrists. Palms pressed firmly together. Feet planted on the floor.
Hold the press for a slow count of ten, then let go and feel the warmth in your hands.
When it surges04
Ride it · 03 · thinking
Say the
true line.
A surge talks loudly. Answer it with a sentence that is calm and true, and repeat it as the wave rolls on.
Say it slowly
This is a wave.
It peaks, then it settles.
When it surges05
Ride it · 04 · attention
Give your
mind a job.
A busy task steers attention onto calm water. Pick one and stay with it until the wave lowers.

Remember
Every wave
settles.
You have ridden every wave so far. The next one settles too. Talking to someone you trust or a professional is always a good step.
